NOTE 1: David ZL2DW advises "we will suspend a 1km rope between 2 hills at the Cape and support our aerial system with/from this rope. Aerials will be 120 ft AGL and 420ft ASL, clear path across water to the North.
NOTE 2: If qsling direct, please include SASE and a reasonable sized envelope as some stations are offering certificates for this event as well as specially printed qsl cards. Your contributions will help defray expenses.
NOTE 3: MALTA. The Gozo Amateur Society will DEFINITELY be operating from MLT003 Giordan's Lighthouse on Sunday, 19th August 2001.
We have to get permission from the Malta Maritime Authority so that we can get electricity supply from within the Lighthouse itself (it is fully automatic in these days). It is not the first time that we will be operating from there: we participated in theLighthouse and Lightships weekend in 1998 and 1999. Last year I could not organise this Field day and it was not held. We will be trying for three stations: 20m, 15mand 10m (if 10 will be open) and will be operating continuously (and simultaneously) from about 7.00 UTC till about 1500 UTC or thereabouts.
The Giodan's Lighthouse is the ONLY lighthouse in Gozo. There are two harbour lights in Mgarr but I don't know if they count for anything. There are no Lighthouses in Comino island.
There are definitely two lighthouses in Malta as far as I know. What I can do is to contact the Malta Maritime Authority - we have to contact them to get permission to activate Giordan's anyway - and see if they can pass me further information: exact location, height above see
level, when they were built, if they operate on automatic, etc. If you need further information, please let me know.
My society also awards the "Worked All Gozo" award. To get this award, one needs to collect just FIVE points. Normally any QSO in any mode with a 9H4xx station (9H signifies the Republic of Malta, 9H4 signifies Gozo island) will award 1 point. A QSO with 9H4GRS or 9H4VSG will award 2 points. Any FIELD DAY event (such as the Giordan Lighthouse) will award 3 points.
Some further information: 9H is an archipelago i.e. a group of 3 inhabited islands and a lot of uninhabited islets and rocks. The largest island is called Malta and after which all the archipelago takes its name. Anybody with a Maltese residential permit and with an address in the island of Malta will have a 9H1 prefix. Anybody with a residential address in Gozo (the second largest island in the group) will have a 9H4 prefix.
A resident of Comino - the smallest inhabited island (just 5 persons!) should use a 9H8 prefix. However, since none of the 5 'natives' is a ham, and a residential permission to live in Comino is unobtainable, 9H8 can only be activated by a Maltese person after obtaining permission to
operate from Comino. (The Gozo Amateur Radio Society will be activating this island next September). A visitor with a valid license should have a 9H3 prefix and that license can be used on any island. Anybody calling AB123XYZ/9H or 9H/ABC12DE is a pirate station.
Please feel free to distribute all this information.
If I can be of any other help (including getting 9H3 licences, permits, fixing accommodation, etc.)
please don't hesitate to contact me. 73's and we hope to get you in our log soon!
